Addressing the issue on behalf of the party, Sifuna acknowledged that some ODM leaders had failed to recognise Kenyatta’s contributions, particularly during Raila Odinga’s recent presidential campaigns.

ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has extended a formal apology to former President Uhuru Kenyatta following remarks made by party members Junet Mohammed and Gladys Wanga that targeted the former Head of State.

Speaking at the funeral of former MP Cyrus Jirongo, Sifuna highlighted Kenyatta’s significant role in supporting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga during key political moments.

Addressing the issue on behalf of the party, Sifuna acknowledged that some ODM leaders had failed to recognise Kenyatta’s contributions, particularly during Raila Odinga’s recent presidential campaigns.

“I want to apologise for the insults directed at you by certain members of ODM who have overlooked the work you did to assist Raila in his bid for the presidency,” Sifuna said.

He noted that the party comprises both thoughtful and misguided members.

“On behalf of those who acted thoughtlessly, I apologise for the remarks directed at you. It is important to remember the loyalty and sacrifices that shaped our political journey,” he added.

The Nairobi Senator further stressed that ODM has always valued Kenyatta’s support. “I now want to formally say, as Secretary-General, thank you for standing with Baba,” Sifuna said, referring to Raila Odinga.

Sifuna also recalled that Raila frequently praised Kenyatta’s commitment, describing him as one of his few genuine allies.

“Raila reminded us repeatedly that you were among his true friends, and that respect remains unwavering,” he stated.

The apology comes as ODM seeks to reaffirm political goodwill and ease tensions arising from internal criticism within the party.

Sifuna has previously been accused by a section of ODM leaders of working with Kenyatta, allegations he has denied.

Earlier, Junet Mohammed and Gladys Wanga accused the former President of interfering in ODM’s internal affairs, alleging that the move was aimed at dividing the Oburu Odinga-led party.

“We have respect for President Uhuru Kenyatta. However, if you want to destroy the ODM Party by sending wheeler-dealers to us, then we reject your plans. We will not take that matter lightly, as we will deal with it decisively,” Wanga said.
